Daily Expense
A shared expense management application built for roommates and shared households to calculate meal costs, common expenses, guest participation, member balances, payments, and settlements.
Overview
DailyExpense is designed for people living together in a shared room, dormitory, apartment, or household. It simplifies the management of shared food expenses and other common costs between members.
The problem
When several people live together, calculating food expenses, guest meals, shared purchases, and individual balances manually can quickly become confusing. Members may disagree about who paid, who owes money, or how much each person should contribute.
The solution
DailyExpense records lunches and dinners, tracks participating members and guests, manages shared expenses, calculates each member's share, identifies creditors and debtors, records payments, and supports final settlement at the end of an expense period.
Key features
Engineering challenges
One of the main challenges was accurately calculating shared expenses when different members purchased different amounts or participated in different meals. Guest expenses also required special handling because the cost of a guest must be assigned to the host rather than divided between all members. Another challenge was preserving accurate financial history even when members were removed or changed. The application also required reliable local database handling and migration so existing expense records would remain available after updates.
Results
The application turns a complicated shared-expense process into a transparent system where every member can clearly see costs, balances, payments, and outstanding amounts.
